You've probably already heard Nancy "Captain Planet" Pelosi's statement that she is trying to save the planet. She is pretty much all that stands in the way of drilling offshore and in the tundra of the far north, never mind that the oil we're getting now is coming from politically sensitive areas that often pay no mind to what they're doing to the environment. Never mind that the tundra is only politically sensitive to environmentalists. Common sense be damned, if she doesn't like the idea of interrupting the mating habits of a caribou, then you can bet we're not drilling. Switch us to wind power RIGHT THIS SECOND. Stop using your car. No oil for you. And you've probably also heard the oft-repeated cry that "drilling now won't help us for another ten years".
Whoever says this probably didn't pay attention in economics class. Way to go, guys!
Since I'm not an economist I'll explain it in terms I can understand without using a dictionary. An important part of the price--of anything, really--belongs in the hands of speculators. They say "Oil is really hard to come by these days! The price is going to go up." And it does. If suddenly there were a leap in supply, speculators would say "Oil is so plentiful these days, the price is going to drop like a rock." And it would.
The thing is, liberals don't want the price of oil to go down. The newspapers, if you trust them, have been reporting that traffic is thinner now, and more people are using the bus or riding their bikes. A few people who dislike paying $4.65 a gallon have even bought hybrids. Airlines are having financial trouble because their Boeing 747s use so much fuel. This, according to environmentalists, is a good thing, because that means we aren't using as much oil. We aren't raping the planet as much. Score one for Mother Nature! Now all we have to do is kill all the evil, evil corporate bigwigs and fork all power over to the UN, and life will be absolutely perfect.
How about moderation?
I'm not talking about government intervention, because we certainly don't need any more of that. Moderation meaning we shouldn't be on one extreme (sweat in your dark house and walk to work) or the other (oil now, oil tomorrow, oil forever). McCain is right on the money in terms of moderation. We can drill, and we'll use that oil while we develop alternative means of energy. It's not a flawless strategy but it's certainly better than what Pelosi and Obama and their ilk want us to do. And right now all we can do is take the best strategy and run with it. (Don't get me started on Obama's terrific display of drilling flip-floppery, a spectacle that would make John Kerry proud.)
Although I hope, fervently, that people will notice how dumb ethanol is. Corn? Really? Come on now. People are starving in third-world countries and liberals actually pushed corn fuel.
